Repair or replace

Concrete Driveway Contractors in Albuquerque

Concrete driveway contractors repair cracked and sunken driveways, and replace the ones whose damage has spread too far to repair. That is our whole job on a driveway in Albuquerque: we look at the slab, tell you which of the two it needs, and do that work.

Small driveway cracks can often be repaired. Large areas that are shifting, or damage spread across the whole slab, usually call for a new driveway. Either way, the slab is "flatwork" to the trade, and the answer depends on how much of it is still sound.

Here is what that means for your driveway:

  • Sound slab, local damage. We repair the spot and leave the rest of the driveway where it is.
  • Damage everywhere. We take the old slab out and pour a new driveway on a properly prepared base.
  • Homes and businesses. Driveways at houses, and parking areas at commercial properties.

Driveway Crack Repair, Leveling and Replacement for Homes and Businesses

We repair driveway cracks, lift sunken sections and replace failed driveways and parking areas, at homes and at businesses. Cracks come from weather, vehicle traffic and tree roots growing under the slab, so we find the cause before we fix the concrete.

These are the driveway jobs we take on, from the smallest repair to a new slab.

  • Repair
    Crack repair

A crack from weather, traffic or a root gets cleaned out and filled before water works into it, and the slab stays where it is.

  • Repair
    Leveling

A section that has dropped at the garage or the street can be lifted back level. The trade calls it "slabjacking"; you may know it as mudjacking.

  • Replace
    Partial replacement

When one section has broken up and the rest is sound, we cut out the failed part and pour a new one, after fixing what broke it.

  • Replace
    Full replacement

Large shifting areas or damage across the whole driveway call for a new one: the old slab out, the base packed firm, rebar set and a fresh pour.

  • Commercial
    Parking areas

A commercial lot takes heavier traffic than a home driveway, so the base and the rebar matter even more there.

Built to last

Base, Rebar and Curing for a Driveway That Lasts

A new driveway lasts when the cause of the old failure is fixed, the base is compacted, rebar sits at mid-depth and the concrete is cured properly. Most of what makes concrete last is the work underneath it: excavation, compaction, drainage and the vapor barrier, all of it out of sight once the slab is poured.

Before the pour rebar set on chairs for a new driveway pour

These are the five parts of a driveway job that decide how long it lasts.

  1. The base

Before new concrete goes in, the cause of the old failure is fixed, whether that is roots, poor compaction or drainage. Replace root-damaged concrete without removing the roots and the new slab heaves the same way.

  2. Compaction

The soil under the slab is packed firm before the forms go up. The trade measures it as "Proctor density", and poor compaction is one of the causes that broke the old slab, so it is not left to chance under the new one.

  3. Rebar

Driveways are reinforced with #4 or #5 rebar set on chairs at mid-depth and tied where the bars cross. Wire mesh, used to cut costs, usually sinks to the bottom of the pour, where it does little.

  4. Concrete strength

Concrete at 3,000 PSI is fine for a sidewalk, but a driveway needs at least 4,000. Ask any contractor, us included, what strength is ordered for your driveway. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association is the trade body for the ready-mixed concrete a driveway is poured from.

  5. Curing

Curing compound goes on right after finishing to hold moisture in while the concrete gains strength, and sealer goes on once the slab reaches full strength. The American Cement Association publishes the industry's guidance on how concrete cures and weathers.

Curing time

When You Can Walk and Drive on New Concrete

New concrete takes foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours and reaches full strength in about 30 days; in between, it takes light furniture after about 7 days. A car is far heavier than a person, so we tell you on the day of the pour when the driveway is ready to park on.

Sealer goes on only once the concrete reaches full strength, so plan on a second short visit about a month after the pour.

Concrete Driveway Repair and Replacement Prices

Repairing damage in one part of a driveway costs much less than replacing the whole driveway, and how severe the damage is sets the price.

What is the average cost to install a concrete driveway?

It depends most on the size, whether an old slab has to come out first, the base work underneath and the finish you choose. Replacing a whole driveway costs much more than repairing one, and concrete driveway repair typically runs $1,000 to $1,500.

How much does it cost to pour a 20x20 driveway?

A driveway that size is priced on the job, not from a chart: removing the old concrete, excavating and compacting the base, the rebar, the concrete strength and the finish all move the number. Call us and we measure it and quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.

Who are some reputable contractors for concrete driveways in Albuquerque?

We repair and replace driveways across Albuquerque, licensed and insured, with free, no-obligation estimates. Whoever you call, ask what concrete strength they order, at least 4,000 PSI for a driveway, and whether they set rebar on chairs or lay wire mesh.
