What it is

Stamped Concrete Patios and Walks in Albuquerque

Stamped concrete is colored concrete pressed with a textured pattern while it is still fresh, so one poured slab looks like flagstone, slate or brick. The color goes in first, the pattern goes on with stamp mats before the concrete sets, and a sealer finishes it.

The color can come from two places, and which one we use changes how long it lasts in the Albuquerque sun:

"Integral color"
Pigment mixed through the whole slab, so the color runs all the way down rather than sitting on the surface.
"Color hardener"
Color broadcast onto the fresh surface. It makes a denser, more UV-resistant top that holds its color longer than integral color alone.

Stamped Patios, Walkways and Commercial Entries

We pour, repair and reseal stamped concrete patios, walkways and entries for homes and commercial properties.

These are the stamped concrete jobs we take on:

  • Patios poured, colored and stamped in the pattern you pick
  • Walkways from the drive to the door, or along the side of the house
  • Entries and front steps at homes and storefronts
  • Repair of cracked or damaged stamped sections
  • Resealing faded or slick stamped concrete, so the color comes back and the surface keeps its grip

Color that lasts

Color Hardener, Sealer and Non-Slip Grit

Color hardener gives the surface a denser top that holds the color longer, and an acrylic sealer with fine non-slip grit restores its depth and keeps grip when wet.

In the surface

Color hardener

Broadcast onto the fresh concrete before it is stamped, it packs the top layer denser and stands up to UV better, so the color fades slower than pigment in the mix alone.

On top

Acrylic sealer with grit

Acrylic sealer brings back the color depth and the wet look of decorative concrete. The fine silica or polymer grit we mix into it is what keeps your footing on a wet morning.

Resealing

Resealing Faded Stamped Concrete

Resealing means pressure washing the surface, letting it dry and rolling on fresh sealer. It is how faded stamped concrete gets its color back without a new pour.

Once we have quoted it, a reseal runs in three steps:

  1. Pressure washWe pressure wash the surface to get the dirt and grime out of the pattern.
  2. Let it dryThe slab has to dry before anything goes on it, so we give it the time it needs.
  3. Roll on fresh sealerWe roll on fresh acrylic sealer with fine non-slip grit mixed in, which brings back the color depth and keeps grip when wet.

Faded, dull or flaking finish? What looks like peeling color is usually "failing sealer", and a reseal fixes it.

What it costs

Stamped Concrete Prices

The area, the pattern and color work and the prep set the price of new stamped concrete, and a reseal costs far less than a new pour.

These are the things that move the price of a new pour:

  • The area. Size is the biggest line, since every square foot is poured, colored and stamped.
  • The pattern and color work. The finish you pick, and how much color and detail goes into it.
  • The prep. Whether old concrete has to come out first, the excavation and leveling, and how easy the site is to reach.

Worth knowing

Stamped Concrete Pros and Cons

Stamped concrete can be slick when freshly sealed, needs resealing over time and is harder to patch piece by piece than pavers. None of that is a reason to skip it, but each one is worth knowing before the pour.

Here is each one, and what we do about it:

  • Slick when wet

    Fresh sealer can be slippery

Right after a fresh coat, a wet surface loses some of its grip. The fine grit we mix into the sealer is there to give it back.

  • Upkeep

    It needs resealing over time

Sealer wears, and the color loses its depth with it. A reseal is a wash, a dry day and a fresh coat, not a new slab.

  • Versus pavers

Harder to patch piece by piece

Pavers are easier than poured concrete to repair one piece at a time. A stamped slab is one piece, so a repair has to blend into the pattern around it.

  • First winter

    Keep the rock salt off

Rock salt and calcium chloride should not be used on decorative concrete in its first winter. Keep it off the slab for that first season.

FAQ

Stamped concrete answers

The questions we hear most about stamped patios and walkways. If yours is not here, call and ask.

What is the downside of stamped concrete?

Freshly sealed stamped concrete can be slick when wet, it needs resealing over time, and it is harder to patch piece by piece than pavers. The fine grit we mix into every coat of sealer is how we keep your footing.

Is it expensive to do stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete in Albuquerque typically runs $10 to $16 per square foot. The area, the pattern and color work and the prep set the price, and a reseal costs far less than a new pour. The estimate is free and we quote the whole job before we start.

Can I do stamped concrete myself?

Stamping has to happen while the concrete is still fresh, so the color, the mats and the tamping all run against the clock, and in hot, dry weather the crew uses "retarders" to buy working time. A reseal is the part a homeowner can take on: pressure wash, let it dry and roll on sealer with non-slip grit in it.

What is the most popular color for stamped concrete?

The right color is the one that suits your house and the pattern you pick, and we go through the choices with you at the free estimate. Whatever you choose, color hardener holds it longer than integral color alone, and a fresh acrylic sealer brings back its depth.
